Retailers like you are already under intense pressure, from reduced margins to competition from online giants, and now you face another woe: the rise of the so-called \u201cserial returners\u201d, who deliberately buy more items than they intend to keep and return them days later.<\/span><\/p>\n

We recently surveyed 4,000 consumers<\/a> across the UK and found that the North East is the worst region for \u2018serial returners\u2019, a trend that is <\/span>costing retailers \u00a37bn a year<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our research reveals that <\/span>36% of all shoppers in the North East<\/span><\/a> admit to buying multiple items with the intention of returning some \u2013 making them the worse serial returners in Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n

To recap, here are the top ten worst regions for \u201cserial returners\u201d in the UK:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. North East (36%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Wales (35%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. South East (33%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. London (32%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. North West (30%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Yorkshire & Humber (30%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. East Anglia (29%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Scotland (29%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. South West (28%)<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Northern Ireland (25%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What does this mean for you and other retailers?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    While the North East tops the list with the most serial returners, it\u2019s an emerging issue that all merchants, across the country, must look to address.<\/span><\/p>\n

    40% of retailers<\/span><\/a> told us they\u2019ve noticed a marked increase in serial returns over the past year, and more than <\/span>half of retailers (52%)<\/span><\/a> are seeing their profits severely impacted by the process of managing these returns.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Our findings also show that more than half of all 18-24 year olds intentionally return items they\u2019ve bought, and with that generation\u2019s buying power increasing year-on-year, it\u2019s only a matter of time before serial returner behavior becomes the norm.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Online shopping has fueled the rise of the serial returner, alongside generous return policies. It comes as no surprise then that online retailers are hit harder, with <\/span>30% of all products ordered online<\/span><\/a> being returned. This lost revenue is worth \u00a37bn for retailers, with sales coming in that they ultimately cannot recognize.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It\u2019s clear that the nationwide escalating returns issue should be of major concern to you and other retailers and something must be done, urgently. There\u2019s some evidence that retailers are beginning to act to recoup return costs in order to protect the bottom line. For example, <\/span>46.7% of (US) retailers<\/span><\/a> now say they charge for ecommerce returns in 2018, up from 39.1% the year before.<\/span><\/p>\n

    That is one option, but doesn\u2019t sit right, and is at odds with the demands of customers. Our study found that <\/span>85% of consumers<\/span><\/a> expect retailers to provide returns for free. While offering free returns is resulting in a loss of revenue, it\u2019s arguably key to your customer experience strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Nevertheless, you must find a means of effectively tackling the growing issue of returns. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Using technology to combat the rise in \u201cserial returns\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Figures from our research show that <\/span>over two-thirds (69%) of retailers<\/span><\/a> do not use any technology to manage returns. This is a clear missed opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Having the right warehouse systems and technology<\/a> in place can help you to optimize the returns process and meet the challenge of serial returners. For example, using technology to centralize your returns data is one way to quickly identify serial returners and helps to put you in a much more informed position where you can make decisions on how you can weed out these problematic shoppers.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In addition, the logistical and financial implications of handling rising volumes of returns and the impact on return rates means that flexible warehouse<\/a> systems should be considered a priority, so that you\u2019re able to meet your consumers\u2019 rising expectations of seamless and free returns while at the same time also protecting your bottom line.<\/span><\/p>\n
