And in 2015, we saw empty shops across the highstreet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But last year, some major retailers including Next, Ikea and Asda chose not to take part. Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.retail-week.com\/data\/black-friday-online-spend-surges-to-123bn\/7016409.article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average sales rose by 12.2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the weekend, this was a decrease against the expected sales growth of 16%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So with the popularity of these sales clearly waning, we were curious as to what retailers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. With that in mind, we&#8217;ve created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zXGKhTWM9R4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this video<\/a> for our YouTube channel, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/retail90\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retail 90<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> full of retailer opinions about the BFCM weekend &#8211; the good, the bad <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ugly:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What do retailers <\/strong><strong><i>really <\/i><\/strong><strong>think about Black Friday &amp; Cyber Monday?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of our research for this video, we spoke with a selection of retailers and wholesalers to find out what they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think about the BFCM weekend. Here\u2019s what we found out:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Natural Baby Shower<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NBS-min.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"789\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NBS-min.png 789w, https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NBS-min-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NBS-min-768x382.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;\">Clifton Vaughan, Managing Director of <\/strong><a style=\"background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalbabyshower.co.uk\/\"><strong>Natural Baby Shower<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a global brand selling a wide range of natural, organic and ethically made baby products)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Black Friday is growing year on year and shouldn&#8217;t be ignored by retailers in a competitive market. It&#8217;s difficult for retailers to plan and get right, but with a thought-out strategy, it can be a great revenue driver. Shoppers are getting savvy to deals and watch prices in November, so it&#8217;s worth trying to inform customers early of impending offers. Also with Christmas around the corner and January sales, be careful not to be discounting too long! We feel it&#8217;s here to stay but hopefully retailers don&#8217;t get too greedy and extend or grow it too much, which will eventually saturate the market and stop shoppers from a flash buying frenzy.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; letter-spacing: 0px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Tablet2Cases<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas, it seems <\/span><strong>Pavel Smirnov, Managing Director for <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tablet2cases.com\/\"><strong>Tablet2Cases<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a global retailer and wholesaler focusing on phone and tablet hardware) is in two minds about the sales, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In October to January, we double our turnover. So business-wise, it&#8217;s good for business. However, I find it ironic that Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. But we are in a consumerist society &#8211; this is when people shop.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\">Bat and Bottle<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bat-and-Bottle-min.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"789\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bat-and-Bottle-min.png 789w, https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bat-and-Bottle-min-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.brightpearl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bat-and-Bottle-min-768x382.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emma Robson from\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/batwine.uk\/\"><strong>Bat and Bottle<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(specialist importers of artisan Italian wines) agrees with Pavel in part and casts doubt on the sales, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think the first time I came across Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I saw it as suicide by retail. January sales had already previously killed pre-holiday sales for many companies. We\u2019ve clearly become more materialistic with how much we spend. We haven\u2019t got involved in Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the past and we positively don\u2019t have January sales. Our principle has always been to be a straight and honest business so we don\u2019t put huge markups on products, to then discount.
